How can I trust the Internet when it comes to privacy and security?

Privacy and security are some of the benefits in participating in OSAT’s online treatments. We are more secure than most other forms of Internet communication. Please refer to our privacy policy for a complete discussion of this issue.

  • You may participate and remain completely anonymous if you wish.
  • All voice communications are encoded and digitally secure.
  • The personal information entered into the OSAT website is secured by Secured Socket Layer (SSL) encryption, the same technology financial transaction systems use.

If other people have access to my computer, can they see that I have been on your site?

No, as long as you perform a few basic steps. We suggest that you logout after each session and close your browser when you’re done. For added security, clear your browser history. We also suggest that you do not use the automatic form completion feature found in most browsers, and don’t have your browser remember your user name and password for login to our programs.

I was told that people can see where I have been on the Internet. Is this true, and what can I do to avoid this?

Yes, there are a few areas on all browsers that you need to look out for:

  • Do not save our site to your Favorites folders.
  • Clear out your temporary Internet files. If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer, go to Tools»Internet Options»Delete Temporary Internet files.
  • When you are finished a session, exit our website, then clear out your History Files. To accomplish this, if using Microsoft Internet Explorer, go to Tools>Internet Options>Clear History, then click on the OK button.

What do I need to connect my computer to OSAT’s Live Online Counseling?

You will need access to the Internet. A high-speed connection is preferred but not required. Your computer will need to have sound capabilities and microphone jack as well. Most computers that are less than 4 years old have this built in. If you have any questions call our toll free help line at 1-800-573-1920.

What do I need to connect my computer to OSAT’s Online Self Directed Treatment Program?

You will need access to the Internet. You will also need to have Adobe Reader installed on your computer in order to use the interactive workbook chapters. If you don’t already have Adobe Reader installed, you can get a free copy from the Adobe website.

If I’m at work in my office, can I participate in an online session during my break in complete anonymity?

No. If you’re connected to the corporate network, network administrators at your company have access to the “digital traffic” going through their systems. Most companies consider the computers and offices as their property and have the right to monitor and control their assets.

Where is the best place to participate in your online sessions?

We would suggest any place that is private with confidential Internet access.

What else do I need to do to prepare for a online session?

Make sure that you remember the date and time of your session. We will send you everything you will need, including instructions and a headset with a built in microphone (if your computer doesn’t have built-in capabilities). If you need further assistance, you can always contact us at: 1-800-573-1920.

When do I check in for the online sessions?

Check-in time is 15 minutes prior to your scheduled counseling session. This will help ensure that you have made all the necessary adjustments to your system for optimal performance. We will be sending you a headset with a built in microphone to make things more private. If you choose to use your existing built in speakers and microphone and feel that you are in a private and comfortable environment that will work just fine.

How fast should my connection speed be to participate in the online sessions?

Our group sessions are most beneficial if you are using a high-speed line for the video portion of our counseling. Lower speed dial up lines will work for the voice connection (VOIP), so you can still participate with the live communication.

Can other people see me while I’m in an online session?

No. Group members can hear each other, but they can only see the counselor.

Can I do anything else on my computer during my online session?

We highly encourage that you refrain from doing anything else on your computer during your session. We believe that our sessions are packed with great information and we feel that you would maximize your return on your investment if you could dedicate your full attention to the session. Also, other activities can sometimes cause your computer to lock-up, requiring a restart and the loss of valuable group session time.

Why is the video portion of the session so choppy, but I can hear my counselor just fine?

If the video is choppy, there can be several possible reasons:

  • If someone else in your house using the Internet on a different computer at the same time as your class, it could be causing a bandwidth bottleneck.
  • If you are using a low speed connection, like a dial-up account, it will not be fast enough to provide good video quality. You must have at least a DSL quality connection; upgrading to broadband (like a cable modem) will definitely solve the problem.
  • Try closing other software programs (especially programs that operate in the background) before you start your session.
